Welcome to
TOC H Southern Africa
THE FIRST PROJECTS
Rev Tom Savage and Mr Michael Westropp, members of Toc H, opened theRand's first blood transfusion service in a small room on the veranda of Toc H in Johannesburg.
They were assisted by a handful of Toc H volunteer donors.
After the Second World War one of the Toc H members, Don McKenzie, returned to Natal with a dream. From the bare veld and no money, he started with the assistance of Toc H, the tuberculosis settlement at Botha's Hill. It has grown into the Etembeni Foundation.
Miss Margaret Lebish or Mrs McGettrick, as she was later known, was a full time social worker for the service organisation Toc- H. She spent her time doing the groundwork for the establishment of a Hospice organisation on the Witwatersrand. Assisted by her colleague Arend Hoogervorst.
The first program introduced was the Hospice-At-Home service. From here the organisation went from strength to strength utilising whatever assistance it could muster and this included operating from time-to-time from people's homes and space provided by Toc H.
Mrs Lorette Hochstadter opened the first Creche and therapy centre for Coloured Cerebral Palsy children in 1977.
Toc H opened the first Charity Shops across South Africa. Rosebank Charity Shop was opened to assist Child Welfare. (Toc H was made a patron of the Child Welfare Society). Other organisations which benefitted from the Charity Shops are Council for the Aged,
Meals on Wheels, Community Chests the list goes on and on. One of the latest projects was assisting the Nkosinathi Foundation for the Blind and Partially Sighted to open the first Internet Cafe for people with visual disabilities.
